Yeah, I like to use just pencil sometimes to get that raw / natural look.
Lately I draw almost exclusively digitally (with a Monoprice Tablet). Being able to manipulate my lines on a whim is definitely my style.
I was honestly never that comfortable with traditional inking. I don’t really like using brushes for comics, and I don’t like being limited to set pen sizes. My first two books (Sharknife & PENG!) were not inked, they were just pencilled really hard and adjusted in Photoshop (TRU STORY). When I DO ink traditionally though (very rare now), I use Microns.
I’m actually working on a blog post about the benefits of digital drawing vs traditional. I should finish that sooooooon

For starting out, the best advice I know of (besides drawing, practicing, sticking to it) is starting small. Don’t jump into comics thinking you’re gonna make a 600 page epic right off the bat. Try doing short stories first! 1-10 page deals will help you improve.
